Jim Crane and Allen Prescott became lovers when they met as teenagers; in the years since they have carried on a furtive and secret affair, getting together only when time and their circumstances allowed. Jim has long wished to create a life with Allen but Allen has always refused. His ingrained belief that "people kill queers" has prevented him from recognizing and accepting his love for Jim. I'm Saying Yes opens when Jim, depressed and suicidal, gives Allen an ultimatum choose me or else. After an agonizing night, Allen makes the decision to accept Jim's offer, finally realizing that a life without his lover is a life not worth living.
I'm Saying Yes chronicles their first four months together as they begin their life as an openly gay couple, in a time-1976-and place-rural west Texas-where this was not the norm. They face challenges that range from simple figuring out details of housekeeping, to sad dealing with the death of Hal Lawrence, an older man who becomes a special friend and trusted confidante. It is a transformational time for both men but particularly Allen, who, over the course of the novel comes to accept his sexuality and ultimately, himself.
Jim and Allen have a few rocky moments but the story ends on a happy note because, as Allen says, when you believe in yourself and are guided by a strong and powerful love, anything is possible. Their deeply shared love and commitment to each is other is proof that that is true.

I have read and or listened to close to 250 books in the last 7 years and this book moved me more than all! I loved this book for its simplicity it's honest and earnest nature and captivated me! I laughed sobbed and down right cried with joy and sorrow. I love this book and could say it is one of the best books I have ever read!! "I'm Saying Yes" by - E.N. Holland. It is a gay romance and thus will have gay sex, but very minimal. My heart was filled with these characters. I was transported by the authors insight to pinpoint the gay experience of a rough gay men. Not feminine but a real men that happened to be gay. I really don't know where to start the review of this book. First it is a love story between two men. If there are any curious about the private life of two gay mature men (not necessarily seniors), this might be a nice primer. My lover and I have been together for 32 years. He is my life, I am his...yet, we have our individual lives.
The two protagonists in this book have a relationship of honesty and the most important thing for two individuals who want a life bond, two way communication. Sometimes we forget that communication is 50% listening.
This book will have you laughing. For the first time in years, at times tears ran down my cheeks. It contains male/male sex, not a lot but some of it is explicit. If it offends your senses, scroll though it. The life's examples set forth in this book are much more important.
This author had a profound effect upon me. There are those with whom "I have had a bone to pick" over the years. I want to forgive them all. I have always been a man who was loving and kind to almost all people. I want to be loving and kind to all people.
Please do yourself a favor and read about two cowboys in love on a small ranch in Texas.
To the author sincere thanks and hat's off. I would have given her 10 stars.
Despite my disparaging title... I really enjoyed this novel. The love story that is Jim and Allen does share similarities with Brokeback Mountain.... However, the story is well written with much more emphasis on love and happiness than the difficulties that two gay men making a life together in the mid 70's in Texas encounter.
Set in 1976, this cowboy love story (set in Idaho and Texas) may have too many characters who are uncharacteristically accepting of our main characters, but that's okay - this is an uplifting story about two guys who finally achieve self-awareness, and in finding their true nature they achieve the kind of happiness we wish we all could have. The writing flows easily, the characters are well-defined, and even if it's a slightly pollyanna view, it will touch you with its "love conquors all" message.
I absolutely loved this book. I havent had my kindle long, and have only been downloading random free books that I see here and there, and I am SO glad that I found this one. As a previous reviewer stated, it does kind of remind you of the movie Brokeback Mountain, but there is so much more to this story. The characters are loveable, unforgettable, you really feel like you know them. Its an amazing story with tons of love, ups and downs, and just heart-warming. Its been a few days since I finished this book, and I truelly miss the characters, I feel like Ive lost contact with two of my closest friends lol. I wish their was a sequal! You would be a fool to pass this one up!
I'd like to thank the author for taking what was a sad movie, for me, and putting a positive ending to the story line. Why do so many movies with gay characters have to be dark or painful? Is life really that bad for everyone? Are there no happy stories to tell? I really enjoyed this story. I have met several couples who have been together for 20 - 50 years, some of them starting in the 1950's. It was not always bad, and they did not always end up miserable. I'm glad to see that the other side of life can be represented. Sometimes they can live happily ever after.
*happy sigh* well I'm Saying Yes is the happiest book I read this year.
Is a journey, Allen & Jim's journey into a life as a gay couple in 1976.
But most of all it was about Allen, who I'm in love with, and his own journey to realize that he is indeed gay and not just gay for Jim his best friend.
The not so happy moments are really powerful, Jim's mention of suicide and Hal's death. Both moments brought tears to my eyes.
And like I said, while reading, I was holding my breath waiting for something to go wrong, this is not that type of book.
It's a happy book, is a story where everything works just the way you want it to work out. Yes, is real as the many challenges a gay couple in the 70's had to overcome.
But in the end I'm Saying Yes is about love, hope and courage.
It is also about cowboys having sex, that's a huge plus ;)
This is Ennis and Jack's (from Brokeback Mountain) fairytale.
What if Ennis, after his divorce, finally gave a go at living with Jack? And what if, once he did that, the stars aligned themselves to create the perfect happy ever after scenario for them?
This is exactly what happens in this book. They have the happy end the original story denied them.
I can't pretend I did not feel wickedly happy about it, though I wish the story had been less like a fairytale.
Recommended for those angry enough about Ennis and Jack's fate in BM to enjoy a fate which is the exact opposite. I cried, I laughed, and I celebrated. Thanks E.N. Holland for this story.
